Eating Disorders are unfortunately common and yet, so personal. Everyone battles this beast in their own way and finding the courage to talk about it with others is an excellent way to heal. That said, recovery, while absolutely possible, can be a gruelling process! We know that often the hardest choices can be the right ones, but knowing that doesn’t make recovery easier, by any means! Controversial opinion...what if we could engage in part of this difficult healing process with … fun? What if we practiced laughing with (and at) ourselves with love & compassion? What if the uncertain, the messy, the unexpected, the imperfect were actually sources of strength & opportunity in us and all we need is a refreshed perspective? What if we learned to accept where we are, as we are, right now in this moment, trusting ourselves to figure it out as we go? This is Improv! To move, act, think boldly in uncertainty! Remember being a kid and just playing? Mistakes didn’t stop us from playing the game. Mistakes made us better at the game, as long as we persisted.
Improv for Eating Disorder Recovery with Ashley invites us to reconnect with a sense of play & humour that can nurture our healing process as we connect within and with others, through the context of games, play, laughter and as a part of a nurturing, supportive group dynamic.
Recovery can unfold in many ways, and not all of them have to be painful. Social connection, mindfulness, breathing, movement, creative expression in a safe space, collaboration, storytelling, spontaneity...all these elements of the recovery process can actually bring us joy! All the while, we foster a trust within ourselves by nourishing a deep acceptance of who we are, and our ability to to recognize our personal power. Playing our way into being an active agent in our own healing will also make us a strong source of support for others!
Using a combination of mindfulness and play, we cultivate a sense of curiousity, playfulness, humour and above all - acceptance - within ourselves for our recovery.
